Woven leather is Vellatini's proof that softness and structure can live on the same surface. It feels soft in hand, yet it keeps its silhouette with use.
Over time, it became the material that shaped Vellatini's standard. It taught us to slow down, to notice small inconsistencies, and to understand that some things only become right after being redone, quietly, more than once.
For this work, the hide has to do two things at once: cut cleanly into narrow strips, and stay stable under daily tension and movement. That rare combination is exactly why we chose French Limousin calfskin. It holds its shape without feeling rigid, and it doesn’t rely on “newness” to stay beautiful. It ages the way good things should: becoming more personal, more lived-in, rather than simply worn out.
To create the surface, the hide is first cut into narrow strips, each edge is smoothed, each strip is placed by hand. This part matters more than it seems. If one strip is pulled tighter than the rest, the entire surface shifts. If one square falls slightly out of line, the balance is gone. And when that happens, our artisans begin again, because woven leather asks for that level of care.
You’ll see that care in how the surface behaves. Light slides across each intersection, sometimes soft, sometimes sharper, depending on how you touch it. Your hand senses structure before softness. Up close, the weave tells you everything.
Living with woven leather is simpler than people expect, just a little more intentional. Keep it away from rough, sharp surfaces that can catch the strips. When it needs cleaning, wipe gently along the weave instead of rubbing hard across it. If it gets damp, let it air-dry naturally, then smooth it lightly with a soft cloth. And from time to time, a small touch of leather cream helps keep the weave supple.
The bag doesn’t need a logo. The weave carries the work quietly. The hours, the patience, the restarts stay in the atelier. What stays with you is a surface meant to be used, touched, and lived with.
